source material written by Kessler, it is narrated by professional voice actor
Scott R. McKinley and features original music by British Invasion-inspired band
The Black Ties as well as background music and cover art by Rande Kessler. “She
Loves You” takes the listener "into the eye of the hurricane" that was
Beatlemania – from John Lennon's trip to the Spanish Rivera with Brian Epstein
in the spring of 1963 to taking America by storm on three <i>Ed Sullivan</i>
shows and the first concerts in America. Readers get to join the band as their fame
not only explodes, but begins to take its toll.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">"This a time machine,” says
Kessler. “Nothing less. The audiobook of <i>She Loves You</i> will
transport you back to 1963...and for 33 fab hours, you will be living with John
and Cynthia Lennon, The Beatles, the powers-that-be at NEMS, and the crazed
fans experiencing the outbreak of Beatlemania. For Beatles fans, this is a
chance to relive it all. For those who missed The Beatles, hang on! This is one
wild ride!"</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Voice actor Scott McKinley
studied and captured the voices of 183 people for the book, including all four
Beatles, Brian Epstein, Neil Aspinall, Tony Barrow, Ed Sullivan, Murray the K,
Cynthia Lennon, George Martin, Bobby Goldsboro, Trini Lopez and many more.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #222222;">“</span><span lang="EN-CA" style="background: white; color: #222222;">For this book in particular I listened to every interview that every
participant gave as close to 1963 as I could find, on YouTube or from my own
collections of recordings,” says McKinley. </span><span style="color: #222222;">“I got to not only <i>narrate</i> a
book about John Lennon and The Beatles during their breakthrough year of 1963-4,
but I had a chance to<i> voice-act</i> all of the participants. Jude's
style includes enough authentic dialogue to really breathe life into the
narrative.”</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #222222;">As for ‘60s authenticity in the
music, Kessler selected songs by New York metro-based band The Black Ties after
hearing them perform at the Fest for Beatles Fans in Jersey City. “They have
the perfect ‘Beatles’ sound for the project!” she says. And the background
music was supplied by Rande Kessler, Jude’s husband and an accomplished
musician and artist.</span><span lang="EN-CA" style="background: white; color: #222222;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>

The material, initially available on the Cavern Club Facebook page and on Lindsay & Isaac's YouTube channel, was acclaimed by the festival and fans. of the popular Beatles memorabilia</span> book, <i>NEMS
and the Business of Selling Beatles Merchandise in the U.S. 1964-1966, </i>has announced
he will be releasing a new e-book in August 2023. <span style="border: none; color: #222222;">Titled <i>Copyrighting The Beatles:
1962-1966</i>, it is a natural follow-up to Crain’s previous work.</span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; border: none; mso-padding-alt: 0in 0in 0in 0in;"><span style="border: none; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">"While researching my first
book about Beatles U.S. memorabilia, I would run across copyright notations for
the items to include in my manuscript,” says Crain. “But I kept noticing there
were more and more Beatles and Beatles-related notations in the files that were
about something other than memorabilia. They kept referencing other styles of
items, which got me curious about what else was out there."</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; border: none; mso-padding-alt: 0in 0in 0in 0in;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="border: none; color: #222222; letter-spacing: -0.5pt;">Crain, a
retired administrator from John Logan College in Southern Illinois, spent over </span><span style="border: none; color: #222222;">two years on research that has
uncovered a fantastic array of items, including games, dolls, sculptures,
novelty records, sheet music (in English, Spanish, and French), written
articles (including Canadian articles), photographs, cartoons, drawings,
paintings and other items – even a back scratcher!</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; border: none; mso-padding-alt: 0in 0in 0in 0in;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="border: none; color: #222222;">The novelty record genre in
particular is an interesting one. “You’d think Beatles novelty records from
that time would naturally be in the rock and roll musical style,” Crain says, “And
some were, but not all.” He has uncovered Beatles novelty records recorded in
the style of </span><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #222222;">American folk, British folk, foxtrot, jive,
samba, bluegrass, doo-wop</span><span style="border: none; color: #222222;">, country,
big band, jazz, orchestral, spoken-word, polka, surf and ska!</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; border: none; mso-padding-alt: 0in 0in 0in 0in;"><span style="border: none; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In contrast with Crain’s first
book, which was produced in a large coffee-table style format, the new book
will be released with a dynamic e-book format option. "Because of the
number of pages, the weight, shipping, and other aspects, I'm excited to offer
this book digitally,” he explains. “I know some readers don't like this mode,
but I'm excited to use this platform and everything it offers. Readers can
download the book to their phone, personal device, handheld device, pad,
desktop, or whatever device they use. The format is like a regular book; you
can flip the page to read it. And one of the most exciting aspects is that
pages will contain bonus content like videos and extra pop-up information to
help enhance the reading experience."</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="border: none; mso-padding-alt: 0in 31.0pt 31.0pt 31.0pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>Copyrighting the
Beatles</i>
is slated to be released in August of this year. You can learn more about Terry

extraordinary woman whom John Lennon loved.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This is the first extensive
exploration of the artist's amazing life, struggles, art, activism, films and
music in astounding detail. No other book encompasses Yoko’s entire life, which
goes way beyond what most people know. It includes the love story of John and
Yoko, and her relationship to the Beatles.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The insightful book
illuminates Ono's spiritual nature and her wisdom. It is the ultimate
exploration of Yoko's lonely childhood in Japan during wartime, her art, films,
music and activism for peace and women's rights.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The misunderstanding and
undeserved negativity that Ono has received throughout her life as an Asian
woman and as the wife of one of the Beatles is explored. We can all learn from
her positivity and effective healing methods.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Yoko’s life story spans
thirty-three years before meeting John Lennon, twelve years with him, and over
forty years of creativity since his death.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The author has followed Ono's
career since the mid-1960s, assembling a vast media archive on the artist.
Yoko's own voice, along with Lennon's and others (in cited, published
interviews) tell her undeniably true story, and unravel many longstanding
myths.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Yoko's incredible body of
work expresses all the joys and suffering of an extraordinary lifetime. It is
all examined in this complete biography.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The book is listed on <b>Best Classic Bands Best Music Books of the Year 2022. </b>It’s also on <b>Mazzy’s Music Books Gift
Guide 2022</b>, and has received an Honorable Mention by Kit O’Toole on <b>Something
Else Reviews' Beatles Gift Guide.</b></span></p>

of the popular Beatles memorabilia</span> book, <i>NEMS
and the Business of Selling Beatles Merchandise in the U.S. 1964-1966, </i>has come
full circle by attending the unveiling of the new Brian Epstein statue during
International Beatle Week in Liverpool in August 2022. The statue, a project
that had been in the works for several years, was introduced to the world on
the 55th anniversary of Epstein’s passing.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="border: none; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Epstein was famously
the manager of the Beatles, amongst a host of other Merseyside artists, and is
often referred to as “the fifth Beatle.” He is credited with cleaning up the
band’s stage act and image, thus packaging them for a wider audience. His
statue is located in Whitechapel, near where North End Music Stores (NEMS),
which the Epstein family owned and operated, was located. Crain’s book covers
the approximately 150 licensed Beatles items sanctioned by the NEMS management company.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; border: none; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="border: none; color: #222222; letter-spacing: -0.5pt;">Crain, a
retired administrator from John Logan College in Southern Illinois, called the
unveiling of the statue, </span><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #222222;">"A very humbling moment. We learned that
early contributors to the statue fund were recognized by having their initials
etched in the jacket lining on the statue. It was surreal to find my ‘TC’ in
the group. So glad to be a small part of this wonderful legacy!”</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; border: none; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">As for Crain’s book itself, the task of documenting original Beatles
memorabilia and identifying the companies involved, as well as their dealings
with NEMS and a plethora of lawyers, was a daunting one. “I’ve assembled as
detailed a book as possible given the lack of record-keeping and the
inaccuracies of time,” said Crain. He also makes clear that the book is not a
price guide, but “a showcase of Beatles memorabilia. Not only that, it is also a
detailed account of how manager Brian Epstein and NEMS dealt with licensing and
much more.”</span></p>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This 11" x 11" hardcover, coffee-table style
book has over 600 images (mostly in color) and contains 232 pages. You can

In conjunction with the Evans family and HarperCollins’ Dey Street Books, Womack is set to release an authorized biography of Mal in 2023, followed by a fully illustrated offering from the family’s archives in 2024. Though he started off as their roadie in August of 1963, he truly became their most intimate companion, with a birds-eye view of Beatlemania as it raged across the world. Closed </i></b>is a<b><i> </i></b>music whodunit examining the secrets, myths, legends, hoaxes,
conspiracies, and the wildly inexplicable events that are such an intriguing
part of rock and roll history. Berkenstadt has spent decades researching the players
behind these famous soundtracks and the mysteries hidden within the music
itself. These questions have intrigued rock and roll fans for so long because no
one has ever asked eyewitnesses the tough questions or dug through the primary
sources and documentary evidence left behind... until now. After many decades,
the back stories of pop and rock music lore are finally unearthed—and the truth
is revealed in <b><i>Mysteries in the Music: Case Closed</i></b>.<b><i> </i></b>The
Foreword is written by rock producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Paul
McCartney, Smashing Pumpkins).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

Berkenstadt's thoroughly researched book, <b><i>Mysteries in the Music</i></b>,
explores rumors and conspiracy theories around some of music’s greatest
unanswered questions. In it, he investigates every conceivable avenue open to
him, documents historical interviews, and conducts his own with those still
alive to answer questions. As an experienced attorney, he makes no assumptions;
instead, he sets out to trace and prove facts. The reader is left with no doubt
of the veracity of the conclusions he reaches. Jim Berkenstadt literally ‘Closes
Cases.’ He also does it all in a captivating and very often humorous manner. He
is clearly passionate about music and this shines through his writing. He has
been around for a while so is lucky enough to have met many of the people
mentioned between these pages. I loved this book and would recommend it to

of the North</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;"> by
David Bedford. <o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Fans of the Beatles
are familiar with the group’s affinity for country music created in America.
What many people don’t realize is that in </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">the 1960s and up to
today, country music experienced tremendous popularity in Europe as evidenced
by its root in the skiffle craze that eventually developed into British rock
and roll music. The interest of the Beatles and others is not as simplistic as
records coming off the ships berthing in Liverpool. It is much deeper and more
substantive.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;"> </span><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">The earliest immigrants to the American
colonies from Britain and Ireland brought with them folk songs, hymns, and
primitive African blues. The songs told stories of love, war, legends, and more
and were written with a regular rhythm generations remember and repeat easily.
The early settlers came from Britain, Ireland, and Scotland, and found homes in
the Appalachian Mountains. As time went on, the descendants moved to other parts
of the new world and the songs began to evolve and develop into what eventually
became all the splinter forms of the country music genre, from country and
western to bluegrass and beyond.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Bedford expertly describes the growth of
country music in the US and how it is also firmly formed in the roots of rock
and roll of the early 1950s in the music of Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, and
others. Interest </span><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">in the country and western genre in both
America and Britain also included western movies and American cowboys and it
was a regular occurrence for British youth to attend Saturday movies to revel in
their interest. Many Liverpool bands took names that were reminiscent of the
American cowboy, as well.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">The cowboy image quickly evolved into the
British rocker. Country and western music did not disappear with the advent of
the Liverpool rock scene. Far from it. It had a strong following in Europe that
continued to grow, despite slipping into the background. Country stars such as
Phil Brady blossomed </span><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">and grew in their own right and there were
many, many clubs that specialized in country music.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Bedford presents the story in a way that keeps
the reader interested. His research skills are deep and impeccable. He uses old
photos and posters as key parts of the story with a charm that adds to the
book.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">David Bedford has tackled subjects, that other
authors sidestep, in his books, such as </span><u style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Liddypool</u><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> and </span><u style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Finding the
Fourth Beatle</u><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">, and presents topics that are new to readers. </span><u style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">The Country
of Liverpool</u><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> is no exception and cements Bedford’s standing as one of the
top Beatles historians of today. An excellent book and an excellent story told
in a way that is interesting, educational, and just plain enjoyable.</span></p>

life of John Lennon, looking back not with misty-eyed nostalgia but with
clear-headed vision that embraces both his many strengths and his many
weaknesses.</i></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">John Lennon was no saint…that’s for sure. He never – not even as a
teen – suffered fools lightly, and when the press (in 1963-66) asked him
ridiculous questions such as “What do you do with all that hair while you
sleep?” he, often as not, presented a jaw-clinched, disgusted visage and threw
them a sharp retort. He admitted that he had “a chip on [his] shoulder bigger
than his feet,” and so his ire often flared in instances through which Paul was
able to maneuver with some politically-correct response. And yes, John was
often jealous and sharp-tongued…and infrequently physical with Cynthia. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But despite the faults that his latter-day detractors have hurled at
him, he is still the most exceptional individual I’ve ever known. John Lennon
endured a string of life tragedies that <i>none
of us </i>could weather, and ultimately, he used them for good. He used them to
create beautiful, haunting, lasting lyrical compositions…he gave us the
soundtrack of our lives.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Look, John had every reason to be bitter. At age five, his parents
(for very complicated reasons) surrendered him to his Aunt Mimi and Uncle
George to rear – and although George Toogood Smith was truly “too good” (exceptionally
kind and loving), Mimi was not. She was the soul of decorum and discipline. And
when six-year-old John – begging for love – would ask her, “Mimi, why are you
here every day when I come home from school?” she would only respond, “Because
it’s my <b>duty</b> to do so.” Mimi taught
John many important things: to study, go to church, mind his manners, behave…but
she never taught to him to love.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">As John grew into his preteen years, he “found out” that his mother,
Julia, lived only about a mile from Mimi’s house. And he began to visit her
frequently, getting to know his two half-sisters, Julia and Jacqui. It was a
bond John cherished, but the knowledge that his mother didn’t “despise
children,” after all – that she <i>wanted
her two girls and not him</i> – was a heavy cross to bear. Alone in his bed at
Mendips, he wondered what he’d done to make her push him aside. He yearned for
her love and attention.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But that doubt must have been dispelled somewhat when, after the loss
of John’s beloved Uncle George (when John was almost 15…a time when he needed a
“father” most), Julia came back into his life as his best friend. For two
years, his mother and he bonded. Julia encouraged John to skip school and hang
out with her. She taught him to play banjo, told him he “had music in his bones,”
played her rock’n’roll records for him, and helped him form a skiffle band, the
Quarry Men. She invited the fledgling band to practice in her acoustically excellent
bathroom, and many times, she banged on pots and pans, their drummer. Julia was
beloved by them all, part of their group. However, on 15 July 1958, she was hit
by a drunk driver and instantly killed. And once again, John lost her. But this
time forever, to death.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">If this had been John’s last tragedy, he would have been completely
justified in being angry at the world. Even at this juncture, he had every
reason to give up and quit – to become a delinquent, a criminal, a bitter
hermit — withdrawn from society. And many (including Dave Bennion, the “Head
Boy” or Prefect at Quarry Bank Grammar) thought Lennon would do just that.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But instead of surrendering to a life of sorrow, John began to write
songs born of the pain. And over the next five years, he wailed at the
microphones of Merseyside and Hamburg and then the U.K. and finally, the world,
for Julia. He told us all, “If she’s gone, I can’t go on, feelin’ two foot
small.” And, “I’m a loser, and I’m not what I appear to be,” and “I’ve got
every reason on earth to be mad, ’cause I just lost the only girl I had. If I
could get my way, I’d get myself locked up today, but I can’t so I’ll cry
instead.” Using his loss to weave beauty, John Lennon created The Beatles. He
relentlessly pushed them — when on many occasions, such as December of 1960,
they gave up and returned to “regular jobs” — to achieve, conquer, succeed.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In his life, John did many great things. He was a talented writer, penning
two award-winning books of wry, satirical poetry and prose. He was a gifted
single-line artist whose gallery still tours the world to critical acclaim. He
was a global advocate for peace. He was a fighter for Irish independence,
writing two songs for the cause and leading the New York City march on BOAC on
behalf of the Irish people. John had myriad talents.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But today, we remember him most because he left us the example of a
life well-lived. He left us an example of a man who never surrendered to the lashing
that the world can dole out. John never let the unending tragedies that tried
to crush him snuff out his soul. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">After the loss of his mother, John went on to endure the death of his
soul mate, Stu Sutcliffe. And John suffered at the hands of an unfeeling press
when a remark he’d made to close journalist friend Maureen Cleave was lifted by
<i>Datebook </i>magazine, taken out of
context, and used to generate a hate campaign against John and The Beatles. In
later life, John suffered a messy divorce from a girl he had once loved deeply.
And in his last decade, he and his second wife, Yoko Ono, lost babies to miscarriages.
Even John’s solo career was rocky: his music was banned by the BBC for his
support of Ireland. Life for John Lennon was <i>never ever</i> easy. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">And yet, John never surrendered. On certain days, when I feel down or
depressed or hurt or angry, when I threaten to throw up my hands and walk
away…I think of John. I think of his resolve and his “toppermost of the
poppermost” attitude and his unflinching determination. In a year of political
vitriol and insults, serious health issues, economic distress, and personal
challenges, I look to him as a life model. And researching and writing about
his life with sincere admiration for 35 years, I repeat about John Winston
Lennon the very best compliment that I could ever give to anyone: <b>he never
gave up.</b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: center;">And that…</span><i style="text-align: center;">that</i><span style="text-align: center;">
is why we still care. </span><span style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 107%; text-align: center;"> </span></p></div><p><br /><i style="background-color: white; color: #666659; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"><br /></i></p>Nicole Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17682276355859356520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920315794631412958.post-21298979446148220212020-12-13T14:17:00.003-05:002021-03-03T14:41:10.274-05:00Octopus' Garden Review of "John Lennon, 1980" Book<p><i style="font-size: 15px;">Adapted with permission from <u>Octopus' Garden</u> fanzine, Volume 30, Issue #2, December 2020. landmark year for John Lennon, as he was ending his </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">self-imposed exile and
rediscovering his muse in dramatic fashion with the release of his and Yoko’s
most mature album to date, </span><i style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Double Fantasy</i><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">John had left music
behind five years earlier and dedicated himself to the role </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">of househusband and
father to his son Sean. He had missed his older son </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Julian’s childhood
and was determined not to make the same mistake again.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">He claimed that he
spent his time baking bread and that was true, at least until </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">the thrill wore off
and it became routine and then he stopped. He continued to write little
snippets here and there, never fully giving up his music.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">During the period
leading up to 1980, John and Yoko continued to work on the longform adaptation </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">of "The Ballad of John
and Yoko," and purchased El Solano in Palm Beach, Florida. Bag One Productions
and Joko Films had been inactive and subsequently dissolved leaving just Lenono
Music, which ended up encapsulating all of their projects. John even became
interested in sailing and took lessons.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">The beginning of the
return of John’s muse began in Bermuda, but it was the trip aboard the <i>Meghan Jaye</i> that really reawakened his
musical spirit. It was a trip into the unknown for John, who had always held
dreams of going to sea, just like his father. A few days into the trip, the
boat ran into a storm and the crew was incapacitated by illness. During the
storm, John had to take the wheel. As his courage rose, he was able to sail the
<i>Meghan Jaye</i> through the tempest,
shouting and singing.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Once settled in
Bermuda, John felt an onrush of songs. Visiting a garden, John viewed a plant
called <i>Double Fantasy</i> and thought it would be a great title. John feverishly
wrote and recorded songs that just came pouring out of him.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Back in New York,
John and Yoko entered the studio to record the album. John was still
apprehensive </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">but as time went on, he
felt more and more that the album would be a success. Encouragement from Yoko, producer
Jack Douglas, and the music involved raised the excitement level within John.
Soon </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">he would begin to
talk about touring.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Renowned music
historian Kenneth Womack reveals in vivid detail the events of that pivotal
year. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">John had found his
muse in unforgettable moments of creative success. Womack’s skill as a
researcher uncovers many incidents that contributed to John’s return to
artistic success in Bermuda and the studio. John was ready to have an
unprecedented year and was ready for anything. </span><i style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Double Fantasy</i><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> was completed and a success, and John was now
working on his next album, </span><i style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Milk and Honey</i><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">,
as he returned from the Record Plant recording studio on December 8, 1980.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Womack describes what
happened next with one sentence, “All that changed at 10:45 PM” and the reader
immediately knows. Womack deals with the aftermath by visiting the legacy that
John left on the world through the eyes of Paul McCartney, George Harrison,
Ringo Starr, and all of John’s fans. There were tributes such as Strawberry
Fields, a statue of John in Cuba, and a memorial in Bermuda, and those are
things on which Womack focuses. It’s the story of John Lennon’s life, not his

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Womack is a renowned

Where Womack surpasses himself is that he
able to take the renaissance that John experienced, lift it off the pages, and
place it into the soul of the reader. Yes, John had a renaissance and the
reader is able to actually feel it through Womack’s writing. That is very rare
for any author and it is a tribute to Kenneth Womack’s skills as a writer. He

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: normal;">PRESS RELEASE - To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the seminal album <i>McCartney II</i>, the Brazilian Duo Lindsay & Isaac presents their "reimagined" version of the song "Waterfalls", in partnership with renowned guitarist Laurence Juber</span><span style="line-height: normal;"> </span><span style="line-height: normal;">(Wings).</span></span></div>

<span style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">L&I: "Waterfalls" is one of our favorite songs, from a fascinating period in the history of Paul and Wings. </span></span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: normal;">The idea of inviting Laurence had to do with his connection with this historic moment (when the original recording was produced) and with the concept we were working on, inspired by a question that has always intrigued us: how "Waterfalls" would sound if it</span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: normal;"> </span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: normal;">had been recorded by Wings, in a hypothetical follow-up to <i>Back to the Egg</i> (1979).</span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; line-height: 26.4px; margin: 0px;">
<span style="line-height: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Had it been, I likely would have taken an approach to this similar to the 1978 “Rupert Demos”* demos, where I played a hollow body electric guitar (then a Gibson Super 400,</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Picture yourself in a box seat at
LA’s historic Hollywood Bowl. An excited deejay comes to the mic and shouts, “And
now, Here They Are: The Beatles!” John, Paul, George, and Ringo run on stage to
the delight of 18,700 screaming fans. The crowd is as loud as a jet engine at
full throttle. The Beatles burn through “Twist and Shout,” with frenzied,
layered vocals that build and explode. This is not</span><br />

three breathtaking concerts recorded by the world’s most famous band. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The Beatles’ 1964/65 Hollywood Bowl
shows were the only performances memorialized by their EMI/Capitol Records
label. The initial 1977 album was overseen by Beatles producer George Martin and
engineer Geoff Emerick. Thirty-nine years later, Martin’s son Giles, with Abbey
Road Studio technicians, released the Apple/Capitol Records 2016 digital remix <i>Live
at The Hollywood Bowl</i>. Here’s a deep look at how those live recordings were
re-imagined. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Backtracking<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Capitol Records had hoped to capture
the Beatles’ 1964 concert at New York City’s Carnegie Hall but was blocked by
the city’s musician’s union. Back on their home turf, Capitol was invited to
record the Beatles’ three Hollywood Bowl shows (August 23, 1964 and August 29 and
30, 1965). There was one caveat: union rules required that all on-stage
recording would be mixed by the Bowl’s sound engineers. All Capitol Records could
do was plug into the Bowl’s mix feed and turn on their ½ inch, three-track <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">tape deck.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Because the Bowl’s engineers were
most familiar with recording classical crowds, the audience mics were
immediately overwhelmed on the mix channels. It was sonic cacophony. The waves
of screams overwhelmed the recordings. You’d think that when the Beatles returned
in 1965, the Bowl’s engineers would remember their previous mistakes but there
were new audio techs, and similar errors occurred. During the first show, Paul McCartney’s
vocal mic was disabled during four songs in the set. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Martin’s Doubt<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; tab-stops: 353.5pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Producer George
Martin wasn’t enamored with the idea of a live concert album. His trepidation
was affirmed after hearing the Beatles’ Bowl recordings. Martin had witnessed
Beatlemania in Britain and the tumult surrounding the band’s live performances.
He surmised that a live album would never match the band’s studio recordings.
The Hollywood Bowl tapes languished in Capitol Records’ archives for six Years.
In 1971, Producer Phil Spector was asked to review them but his work did not
result in an album release.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Then in 1976, word spread
that amateur recordings of the Beatles’ 1962 performances at Hamburg’s <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Star-Club would be
released on Lingasong Records. The Beatles attempted to block the Star-Club record
but lost their initial legal challenge. Apple and EMI/Capitol Records were now
motivated to issue their long-sidetracked album. George Martin agreed to
produce it and despite his reservations, <i>The</i> <i>Beatles At The Hollywood
Bowl</i> became a smash hit. It reached No.1 on the UK’s <i>Melody Maker</i> chart and No. 2 in the USA on <i>Billboard</i>’s Top 200 albums listing. In 1977, Martin said the record
captured the “electric atmosphere” and “raw energy” of the Beatles’ concerts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">In 2009, software engineer James
Clark had been working at Abbey Road Studios for 10 years when he was asked to
separate the instrumentation and vocals on early Beatles mono singles including
“Love Me Do” and “She Loves You.” After his initial de-mixing success, Clark
was approached to work on the Hollywood Bowl project. In 2011, he transferred the
original tapes to a digital format and then used MatLab’s programing language
to write algorithms, which recovered the track’s isolated sound sources. Clark
was also able to lower the Bowl crowd noise by 50 percent. He modeled his
computer simulations on the band’s recordings, after discovering the Bowl
performances varied only one or two seconds from the song’s studio version. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Producer Giles Martin’s remix
features the same 13 songs that his dad chose for the 1977 album, with four
bonus tracks. In 2012, they were submitted to McCartney, Starr, Olivia Harrison,
and Yoko Ono for review and were unanimously approved. What happened next?
Nothing. For four years, the new re-mixes were put on hold until the perfect
time was selected to release them. That moment coincided with Director Ron
Howard’s 2016 film, “Eight Days A
Week: The Touring Years.” His documentary had<i> </i>taken 13 years of
development and production to reach the big screen.<i> </i>Giles Martin’s<i>
Live at the Hollywood Bowl</i> CD/album was released September 6, 2016 and six
days later, Howard’s movie debuted in select theaters, before streaming on Hulu
TV.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The 2016 <i>Live </i>CD comes with a 24-page booklet filled with eight photos of
the Beatles’ concerts and press conference, along with two reproduced <i>LA Times</i> articles from 1964/65. The
first remembers the day that Beatles Hollywood Bowl tickets went on sale, recalling
the elation of those clutching tickets and the utter dejection from hundreds of
diehards who waited in line all night, only
to be turned away empty-handed. Another reviews the Beatles’ August 30,
1965 show with the band bounding on stage at 9:22 PM, powering through their
33-minute set and then dashing off to a
waiting armored car. The compact booklet also includes <i>Rolling Stone</i> writer David Fricke’s smart prose and Producer George
Martin’s original liner notes. The booklet is an expansive and satisfying read.

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The <i>Live At The Hollywood Bowl</i>
tracks have surprising clarity and enriched dynamic range. Layers of sonic tarnish
have been stripped away. Lennon and McCartney’s vocals are brighter and more
powerful. You hear each crisp syllable and appreciate the rawness and force of their
vocals. The band’s instruments sparkle and Ringo’s drumming has more snap.
Listening through headphones, it sounds like you’re standing right next to him.
The power of his playing is startling while he keeps perfect time. It’s also <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">a treat to hear Ringo sing,
slurring/dropping off words, Scouse style. Giles Martin’s remark in the CD
booklet rings true: “The Beatles launch into every song like it’s the last time
they’re going to play it!”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Giles remembered that fans want re-mixed
tracks to be as close to the band’s organic sound as possible: “You can’t fool
around with technology to the extent it would defeat that goal.” He added, “You
want the energy and great sound quality to be true to the Beatles’ analog roots
and what they originally intended.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Martin and Abbey Road mix engineer
Sam Okell didn’t include tracks with noticeable performance flaws. Giles revealed
that the vocal disparities in “If I Fell” could not be remedied and that during
“I’m Down,” the band temporarily fell out of rhythm before quickly coming back
together. He pointed to “She Loves You” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” as the record’s
premier songs. There are many other gems, like the <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">way Ringo’s drumming falls out in
“Roll Over Beethoven,” only to powerfully return four beats later. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The 2016 album holds a trove of
treasures and gives fans a front row seat to experience the world’s greatest group.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">A: The Star-Club record was
available until 1998, when the Beatles finally prevailed in London’s High

was ordered to turn over the Star-Club master recordings to the Beatles and
cease record production. Ironically, the Star-Club tapes had been offered for
sale by saxophonist Ted “Kingsize” Taylor (who recorded the Beatles with a
single mic) and later by the Beatles’ first manager, Allan Williams, who had
acquired the recordings. Both Beatles road manager Neil Aspinall and Brian

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">From a very early age, Terri Whitney has had
two passions: music and poetry. Both were encouraged by her parents and Terri
brought both of these passions into her everyday life. <u>Music Legends in the
Heavens</u> is one of the ways she </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">has done this. T</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">his is the second book that Whitney has
published relating to musicians and the music they have given us. Her previous
book was <u>Any Rhyme At All: A Beatle Fan’s Journey</u>.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<u><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Music Legends In The Heavens</span></u><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> is a
poetry book that covers 50 musicians who have gone before us, but left us with
plenty of music or have been an influence on many of our current
musicians. All poems have been written by Terri Whitney and each poem has its
own hand-drawn illustration by Marti Edwards.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Each of the poems beautifully captures the
personality of the musician that is no longer with us before presenting his or
her artistic accomplishments and ending with the impact that the icon had on us
culturally before leaving this world behind. Whitney creates a passage that
identifies the artist in a way that reminds the reader of the gift that each
musician gave to the world.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">The style of Whitney’s poetry is narrative within free style
structure using both 4 line and 6 line form. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Her work is well-structured and clearly conveys a feeling or
attribute about the topic of the poem. Each poem is sprinkled with personal
feelings or general feelings about the subject. They made a difference in
people’s lives whether individually or collectively, and that message comes
through in her writing.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">A well-known impression of each artist at a
particular moment in time is done in pencil and is strikingly captured by
illustrator Marti Edwards. </span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Edwards graduated from The School of the Art
Institute of Chicago with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1969 and has won
numerous awards for her art and designs. Marti is also a multi-media painter
and works in oil, pastel, water-color, and acrylic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Whitney’s words, along with Edwards’
illustrations, invoke emotional images that justify the term “legend” in the
title. They were not legends in our minds when they were alive because we lived
with them. It was only later when they were gone that we realized their true
impact in the world of music.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Music Legends In The Heavens</span></u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> will bring a smile to the reader’s face as it bring back
memories of these 50 musical icons that helped shape music as we know it today.
The book earns a grade of <b>A</b>.</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 10.5pt; font-style: italic;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">This book explores
the Beatles on a number of levels, from their sounds to how their innovations
affected those close to them as well as their fans. <span style="background: white; color: #333333;">They were a musical tsunami. From 1962 to 1970, they recorded
songs that still spark and glow, and their harmonies move together like
parallel lines. It feels like they are in the same room, singing directly to

Beatles Moments & Memories</u> recounts rarely-heard tales
from the Beatles’ legacy. Brickley has published dozens of interviews, articles,

musician. The book was originally published in 2017 and has been revised and

<u><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Postcards from

great deal into its 200 pages, beginning with a series of eight backstories
that bring to light the phenomena known as the Beatles and how the music they
created continues to stand the test of time. Brickley does an excellent job of
presenting their musical legacy and explains how they developed their
harmonies, chord progressions, and phrasing that resonates throughout their
musicianship. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif;">Brickley also touches
on the influences on the Beatles, from Motown to Dylan, and how these affected
the band by reaching into their histories. He continues to show the Beatles’
progression in music through their interests such as transcendental meditation
and their stay in Rishikesh, through the solo careers <o:p></o:p></span></div>

through London into their Liverpool childhood homes with side trips to Paul

The Beatles does resonate in education. What better way is there to challenge
the minds of our youth in the classroom than by using the creativity that the
Beatles used in creating their masterpiece to inspire educators, and students,
to create their own masterpieces.<br /> <o:p></o:p></span></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><o:p><br /></o:p></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">Creativity is in all of us but tapping into it isn’t always
easy. It’s not difficult once you get there, but getting there is a challenge.
You have to learn to look at things differently from the accepted way that you
are familiar with and that can be daunting. We tend to subscribe to the tried
and proven much too often and that can, and often does, stifle creativity.</span><i><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><br /><br />Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band</span></i><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> is
considered by many as the Beatles’ pinnacle. Up to that point, the band had
followed the rules in creating and recording music. They stopped touring and
decided to take the ideas that were in their heads and make them reality by
forgetting what the normal accepted routine of the studio was. They had a
vision. If they could think it, then they could create it. <i>Pepper</i> was a team effort by not only the four Beatles but by many
others in the studio who were challenged to find a way to create what the
Beatles were hearing in their minds. Everyone involved with <i>Sgt. Pepper</i> was motivated to make it
happen and they were willing to take the necessary risks to bring that vision
to fruition.<br /><o:p></o:p></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><o:p><br /> </o:p></span><u><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">The Pepper Effect</span></u><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"> explores the four steps necessary, in Gaillard’s
mind, for creating the conditions for motivation, collaboration, creativity,
and innovation. Believe in your vision. Believe in your masterpiece. Believe in
your collaborators. Ignore the naysayers.</span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><br /><br />Inspiration and vision are keys to success. Educators are
entrusted to open the minds of students and teach them to achieve all they can
achieve but how can they do that if they are doing things the “accepted way”?
What better way is there to inspire than to be inspired? </span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><o:p><br /></o:p></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><br />Gaillard uses <i>Sgt.
Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band</i> by The Beatles as a template for inspiring
educators and principals to become more positive, innovative, creative, and
collaborative—and for encouraging students to do the same.</span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><br /><br />When Gaillard wrote <u>The Pepper Effect</u>, it was for the
benefit of educators. The same principles also apply to getting the best out of
people regardless of whatever field they are in. Success is always the goal </span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;">but to
get there you need a vision and you need creativity to succeed. Leaders in
every field will benefit, as will those who work for and with them, if they are
inspired.<br /> <o:p></o:p></span><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif;"><o:p><br /> </o:p></span><u><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 107%;">The Pepper Effect</span></u><span style="background: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 107%;"> shows that creating
your own masterpiece inspires others to do the same and it gives you a roadmap
on how to take your vision and make it a reality. I give this title an <b>A</b>.</span><br />

Geoff served as George Martin's right-hand man in the studio as The Beatles' recording engineer, and played a critical part in helping the band achieve the sounds they wanted. It would not be incorrect to say that, without Geoff Emerick, many landmark Beatles recordings would not have the "signature sound" that they do.<br><br>Here are five instances in which Geoff Emerick's ideas and influence in the studio were critical to the finished recordings:<br><br><font size="4"><b>Yellow Submarine</b></font><br><br>In his book <i>Here, There and Everywhere</i>, Emerick says that The Beatles wanted the sounds of water, boats, and marine life to help shape the "Yellow Submarine" recording. With George Martin out sick for this recording session, it was Emerick who oversaw the recording of various sound effects, like blowing bubbles in a glass of water through a straw.<br><br>When John Lennon decided that he wanted his voice to be "recorded underwater to simulate being in a submarine," Emerick "thought to get a bottle of water and put a microphone in the water and get him to sing to that." Recognizing the danger this posed (electronics and water don't usually mix), Emerick "put the mic in [a] condom and put it in the bottle." That particular take didn't end up getting used on the final record, but now you know: John once sang a vocal through a microphone wrapped in a condom, submerged in water!<br><br><font size="4"><b>Paperback Writer</b></font><br><br>Paul McCartney had been listening to a lot of American records prior to the recording of "Paperback Writer," and he loved the heavy bass sound that these recordings featured. As Emerick recalls, Paul came to him and said "[Paperback Writer] is really calling out for that deep Motown bass sound ... so I want you to pull out all the stops this time." <br><br>Emerick's solution? "It occurred to me that since microphones are in fact simply loudspeakers wired in reverse ... why not try using a loudspeaker as a microphone?" With that, Emerick re-wired a loudspeaker, "conducted a few experiments," and discovered that "I was able to achieve a good bass sound by placing it up against the grille of a bass amplifier, speaker to speaker, and then routing the signal through a complicated setup of compressors and filters."<br><br>"Paperback Writer" owes its signature bass sound to Geoff Emerick's creativity.<br><br><font size="4"><b>Revolution</b></font><br><br>John was proud of his new song, "Revolution," and wanted the guitars to be particularly crunchy, loud, and nasty. Nothing Emerick had been able to do in the studio up to that point had satisfied John, until finally Emerick hit upon an idea that could easily have gotten him fired: "no amount of mic preamp overload had been good enough for [John] ... I decided to try to overload two of them patched together, one into the other ... I knelt down beside the console, turning knobs that I was expressly forbidden from touching because they could literally cause the console to overheat and blow up." <br><br>Emerick found the distortion sound that John wanted, a sound that set the bar for future distorted guitar effects, and all because he was willing to push the limits and "come up with the maximum amount of overload the board could take without bursting into flames."<br><br><font size="4"><b>Strawberry Fields</b></font><br><br>John's signature song has a signature sound that owes a lot to Geoff Emerick. "Strawberry Fields" had been recorded in dozens of different takes over many weeks, and in the end John liked the beginning of one take, but liked the end of another take. He wanted the two takes spliced together, which normally would have been no problem, except that the two takes had been recorded at different tempos, and different speeds.<br><br>The splice would have been obvious. The song would suddenly be playing at a faster speed, in a different key. As Emerick explains, in today's technological age "a computer can quite easily change the pitch and/or tempo of a recording independently of each other, but all we had at our disposal was a pair of editing scissors, a couple of tape machines, and a varispeed control." <br><br>But with a demanding John Lennon leaving the problem in his lap with a flippant "you'll figure it out, Geoff," Emerick rose to the challenge: "After some trial-and-error experimentation, I discovered that by speeding up the playback of the first take and slowing down the playback of the second, I could get them to match in both pitch and tempo."<br><br><font size="4"><b>Tomorrow Never Knows</b></font><br><br>Perhaps Emerick's most recognizable contribution to a Beatles recording is his work on "Tomorrow Never Knows." John wanted his vocal on the final verse to sound like the Dalai Lama chanting from a faraway mountain, and it became Emerick's responsibility to figure out how to make that happen.<br><br>At one point, John even insisted that Emerick suspend him upside down from the ceiling with a rope, and swing him in a circle around the microphone while he sang!<br><br>Happily, Emerick found a more creative solution: "The studio's Hammond organ was hooked up to a system called a Leslie – a large wooden box that contained an amp and two sets of revolving speakers ... nobody had ever put a vocal through it." With a bit of re-wiring, Emerick was able to feed John's vocal through the Leslie's rotating speakers, giving it that distinctive sound that is heard on the final recording.<br><br>Rest in peace, Mr. Emerick. "Your name liveth for evermore."<br></div></div> Nicole Mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17682276355859356520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1920315794631412958.post-12473245552162059822018-07-05T08:47:00.001-04:002018-07-05T08:47:29.559-04:00Beatlefan Review of 'Ringo Starr and the Beatles Beat'<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i style="color: #666659;">Article by John Firehammer and originally published in <u>Beatlefan</u> magazine </i><i><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">(P.O. <div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
And this book, first published electronically and
now in hardcover, is one of the best tributes of all.</div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
Ringo’s abilities as a drummer have been debated
for years. He was stereotyped for years as “just lucky,” a mediocre musician
who landed the best gig on earth. Much of this is due to his lack of flashiness
as a player – people are impressed by drum solos, even when they’re as musical
as a car wreck – and his own self-deprecating personality.</div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
But most people who know anything about playing
drums will say, without hesitation, that Ringo was great. And here two drummers
detail many of the reasons why.</div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
Cain and McCusker, both Liverpudlians, cover just
about every percussion-related topic in Beatles history, including Ringo’s
predecessors in the band. There are descriptions and photos of Ringo’s various
drum kits and McCusker’s entertaining firsthand recollections of seeing the Beatles
in action in the Cavern, including an anecdote about the time Ringo almost ran
him over outside the club in his Ford Zephyr.</div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
But the real meat of the book is the song-by-song examination
of the Beatles’ catalog and the percussion parts featured on each. Even the
songs on which Ringo doesn’t play drums (the most famous case being “Back in
the U.S.S.R., featuring Paul pounding the skins) and the songs with no drums at
all, such as “Yesterday” and “Eleanor Rigby,” are analyzed for their rhythmic
properties.</div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
There’s interesting information here that will get
you listening to the Beatles’ music in new ways. I was struck by how, even
early on, the band was experimenting with different percussive techniques and
instruments. “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” for example, features not just
drums, but echo-drenched overdubs of Ringo pounding two drumsticks together,
creating an unusual and ear-catching effect. And on “Don’t Bother Me,” Ringo
plays an African djembe drum joined by John on tambourine and Paul on
woodblock. </div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
Musical notation of Ringo’s drum parts is featured
throughout, along with the time signature(s) of each tune. We see how, recording
in the days before drum machines, the Beatles’ shortened and stretched the
meter of their tunes to accommodate their lyrics, or just make the songs more
interesting. The opening bars of “Drive My Car,” for example, are in 9/8, while
“Good Day Sunshine” shifts between 4/4, 3/4 and 5/5. Ringo made it all make
sense.</div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Cambria",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">And, finally, we also get this perfect
description of Ringo’s musicianship, taste and contributions to the Beatles’
songs: “It wasn’t simply <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">what</i> Ringo
played, it’s <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">how</i> and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">when</i> he played. Ringo possesses a
sensitivity and empathy that enhances each song without dominating.” Exactly.</span><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
